Prana in movement, breath and stillness

We need to start at the beginning. What is prana and how do we work with it? This session is a tutorial to give you insight into the power of working with your subtle energy. There are 3 main ways to access our prana (movement, breath and stillness) and we’ll work step by step to discover the techniques and the benefits of understanding the power of our Prana.

Movement practice to release Prana

Let’s get the energy moving! We’ll get energy moving through your muscles, joints and spine through movements that wave, spiraling, flex and extend and then bring it all into stillness. Pause and learn to sense your life force rising up under your skin. The more we cultivate our relationship with Prana, the more we are aware of the energy flowing under the skin and ultimately feel connected and whole in our body which is the aim of an embodied practice.

Tibetan Purification Pranayama

Learn a simple but wonderful Pranayama practice accessible to everyone. This variation of Nadi Shodhana uses alternate nostril breathing with few unique aspects as it involves a mudra with an arm movement. The mudra helps maintain focus. Tibetan Purification Pranayama will ultimately tune you into a sense of grounded balance with ease and calm.

Vi Sama Vritti Pranayama

This practice focuses on lengthening the exhale longer than our inhales. A lot of research has been done on the benefits of an extended exhale and this technique, with a retention on the inhale, is no exception. Even just a few minutes of Vi Sama Vritti can relax the sympathetic nervous system, increase relaxation, reduce anxiety and tension as well as expand the lung capacity. This is a practice you’ll return to again and again.

Raised as a Vendatist, I grew up immersed in the philosophy of yoga. In my 20's I began to practice asana and research different ways of moving while studying the history of yoga. The resulting discovery is that yoga is EVOLVING and always has, so we have permission to explore these practices, challenge the myths, and move forward with knowledge and awareness.
