Hands to Core

Rethinking Support, Strength and Stability in Weight-Bearing Asana

Most people assume their students have weak wrists. This lab looks at the whole structure instead — and finds lightness where there was compression.

Beyond The Basics

It rarely starts at the wrists.

Wrist, shoulder and neck discomfort in asana practice rarely begins with the wrists. More often, it stems from a limited understanding of how the shoulder joint works, how the hand meets the ground, and how support travels through the arms into the core.

Outdated biomechanical and alignment cues can be one of the biggest contributors to these issues. The solution isn't simply to strengthen the wrists, get the correct "alignment," or push the floor away harder. We need to look at the whole structure.

In this Teachers Lab, we'll explore how the placement and organisation of the hands influence everything above them — and what happens once we adjust that structure and distribute load more intelligently: we find lightness.

Hands to Core is part of the ongoing Teachers Lab series: monthly live sessions for teachers who want to go deeper into the anatomy, movement intelligence, and embodiment behind what they teach. On its own, this session is €45.

Teacher's Pathway members already have full access to this lab, and every other lab in the series, as part of their Teacher's Pathway membership.

Once we adjust the structure and distribute load more intelligently, something remarkable happens: we find lightness.

What We'll Explore

From compression to connection.

We examine the role of the serratus anterior, latissimus dorsi and obliques, and how these muscles work through the fascial network to connect the hands and shoulders to the centre of the body. Through experiential anatomy, embodied movement, and practical teaching applications, we'll explore:

Why "weak wrists" are rarely the whole story

How the hands meet the ground, and why it matters

The natural movement of the shoulder joint and shoulder girdle

How outdated alignment cues can create compression and compensation

The role of the serratus anterior, latissimus and obliques

The fascial connection between the hands, shoulders and core

How to distribute load through the whole body

Practical ways to create strength, space and lightness in Downward-Facing Dog, Plank, Chaturanga and other weight-bearing postures

This isn't about finding one correct alignment. It's about understanding the relationships within the body, so we can replace compression with connection, effort with organisation, and heaviness with support.
