Teaching the Sensing Body

Proprioception, Interoception and the Path to Embodiment

"Notice what you feel" is one of the most common invitations in an embodied class. But what if your student doesn't know how to feel, or doesn't feel very much at all?

Beyond The Basics

You can't demand embodiment. You have to offer it.

As teachers, we cannot assume that everyone arrives with an established connection to their body. Body awareness is a skill, and for many students it needs to be introduced slowly, clearly and with care.

Proprioception helps us recognise where we are in space and how our body is moving. Interoception brings awareness to sensations arising from within the body. Exteroception connects us to information coming from the world around us. These sensory systems continually influence one another, and they need to be woven thoughtfully into the way we structure, language and teach a class.

But awareness is not always comfortable or accessible. Trauma, chronic stress, pain, anxiety and exhaustion can affect a person's capacity or willingness to tune in, and some students may simply not want the kind of internal experience we are inviting.

Teaching the Sensing Body is part of the ongoing Teachers Lab series: monthly live sessions for teachers who want to go deeper into the anatomy, movement intelligence, and embodiment behind what they teach. On its own, this session is €45.

Teacher's Pathway members already have full access to this lab, and every other lab in the series, as part of their Teacher's Pathway membership.

Embodiment cannot be demanded. It must be offered.

What We'll Explore

Learning to sense, and to teach sensing.

Through sensory exploration, practical teaching tools and discussion, we'll investigate:

Proprioception, interoception and exteroception, and why they matter

How to weave sensory awareness into the structure of a class

Why some students struggle to recognise or describe sensation

The relationship between trauma, stress, safety and body awareness

Why choice, pacing and external orientation are essential

How hypermobility can affect proprioception and joint awareness

Supporting hypermobile students without encouraging greater range

Teaching embodiment isn't simply about asking better questions. It's about creating the conditions in which awareness can emerge, while respecting that every student's relationship with sensation is different.
