Language & 'Alignment' for an embodied practice

For teachers & regular practitioners

Empower yourself and your students with mindful communication

As a good percentage of the yoga world is beginning to discover the joys and benefits of embodied, somatic and natural movement practices it is clear that the teaching language has to change. The old cue based system where the focus is on getting the pose “right” is becoming outdated. It not only suggests a “one size fits all” model but it is also a very disempowering way of communicating.

Julie has always been passionate about communication as a teacher and now more than ever she is keen to give skills and the science behind how language effects us. We’ll discover how the nervous system reacts when we receive commands or negative directions. Pointing out common yoga language that is restrictive and comparative and how we can turn to a language of allowing, support and empowering as students to find their own way. When we are teaching a more embodied practice we need to guide students to feel in their bodies and have an awareness of the experience. A great deal of research has been done in healing trauma and stress via somatic movement practices and how this is presented to clients or students is crucial.

Needless to say this expands beyond the yoga room and into our everyday lives. How are communicating with each other? Ourselves?

What to expect

This 3 day event will take us through a journey to unravel outdated modes of communication and bring us to connect with more compassion, not only for our students but also ourselves.

Day 1:

How language effects the body, the nervous system and cultivates self beliefs.  How a cueing based system in yoga perpetuates disempowerment, what words/phrases we need to stop using and how to begin that change.

Day 2:

If we’re not cueing, then what happens to alignment and structure? We’ll go through how to help students find their own stability and structure without leaving them bewildered or confined. The breath and how we talk about it, cue it or not will also be discussed. Learn how to get students to explore with guidelines and cultivate trust in the classroom.

Day 3:

What is our self talk? How the silent language we use on ourselves hi-jacks our brains and creates unconscious beliefs systems. We’ll go through the limbic system in the brain and learn techniques and practices that free us from our mental patterns. We also take this information into how we communicate with everyone.

Who is this for?

For teachers and regular practitioners who are interested in enhancing their communication skills.

About Your Teacher

Julie Martin wants you to think outside the box, get off your mat, shake up the old dogmas and find freedom to unfold into the beauty of a yoga practice that emerges from the inside. With over 25 years of experience and an international following of students and teachers alike, Julie’s greatest aim is to inspire. Her particular passion for human movement means continual investigation of new anatomical approaches, working with natural movement, range of motion, integrated stability and letting go of some of the old asana myths in order to move with the body and not against it. The practice is always an enquiry, a somatic exploration of sensation, movement and stillness.
