Cultivating Pratyahara and Dharana in our practices

For teachers and practitioners

07 August to 09 August 2019

Yoga Shakti, Stockholm, Sweden

Over 3 days we will tune out distractions and work with tools to draw inwards. Learn how to integrate this information to your teaching toolkit. Shift from our examination of how to make shapes and reclaim ourselves through an embodied practice then all the aspects of Yoga begin to align.

Modern Western yoga has become a bit over obsessive about asana, how to move the body, how to not move the body.  The dialogue between what is alignment, is it useful, are handstands important, should we be flexible, have dominated the yoga world and many workshops out there.   However, Hatha Yoga is an embodied practice.  We need to tune inwards in ways that haven't really been represented in yoga very readily.   This workshop aims to assist you in discovering why Pratyahara and Dharana are so crucial to our practices and how to bring this information into the classroom.

Pratyahara is described as the withdrawing of senses.  We live in a world where we are constantly over stimulated. The practice of pratyahara is needed now more than ever.  We receive more images and bits of information in one day than someone living in 100 years ago would have received in years.  We get distracted so easily and this puts our nervous systems on high alert.  Dharana, one pointed focus, allows us to use the awareness we cultivate through the pratyahara and then focus it on one aspect, usually internal.  This can be a visualisation, a mantra, the breath or a sensation that arises.

The beauty of both Pratyahara and Dharana is that we can utilise them for our benefit in movement, pranayama and meditation.  During this workshop we will become attentive of our awareness, where it is drawn to, what can we do to prevent it from wandering. Bringing in the pratyahara and dharana into the asana/movement exploration, as well as pranayama and meditation.

About Your Teacher

Julie Martin wants you to think outside the box, get off your mat, shake up the old dogmas and find freedom to unfold into the beauty of a yoga practice that emerges from the inside. With over 25 years of experience and an international following of students and teachers alike, Julie’s greatest aim is to inspire. Her particular passion for human movement means continual investigation of new anatomical approaches, working with natural movement, range of motion, integrated stability and letting go of some of the old asana myths in order to move with the body and not against it. The practice is always an enquiry, a somatic exploration of sensation, movement and stillness.
