Advanced Teacher Training Week

Sequencing & Innovative Movement

Join Julie for five days of diving into sensation and exploring freedom in movement. You will be given tools and a layout on how to create, adapt and refine what you offer in your sequences. Embracing an embodied practice.

Julie Martin has been creating innovative sequences that take students on a layered journey of movement and meditation for many years. Her philosophy behind putting classes together is drawn from the latest anatomical information to support function, using organic and natural based movements to enhance the asanas, aiming towards range of motion instead of flexibility and taking into consideration the important role that the nervous systems plays.

Julie’s passion is to take the technical information and ensure that what we are teaching is clear and backed up with knowledge. She aims to enable teachers to present it with confidence, clarity and inspiration. Finding an embodied approach to movement and stillness, steering away from the athletic, “work-out” mentality or linear structured classes and guiding students back towards the inner realm of awareness and experience. The goal is never to perfect a shape but to be present with what is moving through the body, the mind, the emotions and how to harness this awareness and bring it to our everyday lives.

With 25 years of experience, Julie will take you through daily sessions that look at structure and how to use it best. Learning to work with repetition, layering movement and creativity. Also how to bring in the new movement ideas without overwhelming your students and finding a new language that gives more clarity as we move away from some of the older “cue based” methods.

What to Expect

If you’ve been feeling stuck in your teaching process then this course will help you add new elements and bring new life to your classes without overloading yourself or your students. You will be given tools and a layout on how to create, adapt and refine what you offer in your sequences. Whether you are a new teacher looking for a better skill base, an experienced teacher in need of inspiration or you’ve been trying to add new movement principles to your classes and need confidence, this week is the perfect continuing education for all.

Everyday will also include a full practice with Julie so that you can clearly see the philosophy in action.

Oct. 20-25, 2020

  • Sunday: 11:30-6.00
Looking at overall structure and integrating different approaches to that structure so that we unlock potential for creativity.

  • Monday: 11:30-4:45
Layering movement, working with repetition and in “rounds”. How creating repeated sequences gives emphasis on feeling instead of thinking in order to guide students into a movement meditation.

  • Tuesday: 10-3:45
Introducing new movement ideas without confusing yourself or your students. It can be difficult to change up the way you teach to allow for more freedom and creativity, so we take time to look at the building blocks to integrate new information with confidence and clarity.

  • Wednesday: 11:30-4:45
    Introducing new movement ideas

  • Thursday: 11-5:15
Enhancing our creativity and how to harness it in order to make sense for our students as we turn it into a structure that becomes clear.

  • Friday: 11:30-7pm
Combining all the aspects of sequencing together, practice creating sections of a full class and addressing the language skills to teach and take students further.

Getting Here

The closest airport is KONA but HILO is also ok just a little further. There are car rental facilities at both airports.

Once the course is finished or before it starts you may want to check out the neighbouring islands and there is a small airport in Waimea with propeller planes that can easily take you to Maui or Oahu.

We look forward to welcoming you with a big Aloha!

Accommodation is not provided in this training. There are AirBnB’s and VRBO’s (Vacation Rental by Owner) in the area and also in the beach communities (more expensive). We will provide a list of areas close to the studio and can assist with questions that may arise as you are booking accommodation. Also note that you will need to hire a car while on the Island. There is no public transport to speak of and walking to and from the studio will be too far. October is low season in Hawaii so prices should be reasonable. Once you’ve done your initial research into accommodation and flights, please do not hesitate to ask questions.

About Your Teacher

Julie Martin wants you to think outside the box, get off your mat, shake up the old dogmas and find freedom to unfold into the beauty of a yoga practice that emerges from the inside. With over 25 years of experience and an international following of students and teachers alike, Julie’s greatest aim is to inspire. Her particular passion for human movement means continual investigation of new anatomical approaches, working with natural movement, range of motion, integrated stability and letting go of some of the old asana myths in order to move with the body and not against it. The practice is always an enquiry, a somatic exploration of sensation, movement and stillness.
