Current asana styles are very new in terms of yoga history. What we practice is very modern and has very little resemblance to ancient yoga, which boiled down to a few seated poses. This is often overlooked by many teachers and studios. We attempt to contort our bodies into shapes that are not designed for the average person while having no measure of the long term effects of this kind of practice. The current rise in yoga injuries is evidence that something is missing in our understanding.
During this weekend we will look at the history of yoga and the asana practice itself and delve into the most up to date information from the anatomy world on what we are REALLY doing to ourselves. We will also investigate the relationship of the nervous system, the breath, the reaction of the mind and how these elements are integral in finding our true practice that encompasses yoga as a whole.
By looking at the natural movement of each individual we allow ourselves to understand the rhythm of our bodies and breath and listen to what is needed. We will explore our possibilities instead of limiting ourselves based on what we have been told the pose should look like. We need to pull apart structure and form in order to deepen our understanding and experience where movement comes from in order to return fully present into stillness.
This weekend is open to all levels, will include lecture, videos and physical exploration as well as a full asana practice each day putting the knowledge gained back into our bodies.
