Melanie CooperThe Astanga Vinyasa Primary Series is known as yoga chikitsa or yoga therapy and it cleanses and tones the body. The primary series focuses on forward bending - stretching the hamstrings and opening the lower back. The forward bends contract the front of the body purifying the internal organs. It also builds up strength through all the vinyasa.

... And it lays the foundation for the second series...

The Second Series is known as nadi shodana and it cleanses and tones the nervous system. It consists of a series of backbends, then legs-behind-the-head, ending with arm balances and calming postures.
