Our focus will be working with Ashtanga Vinyasa method, but there will also be a lot of involvement in the Vinyasa Flow, Hatha and Restorative classes.
This course has several unique aspects that you will not find in other programmes:
- Working with several highly experienced teachers.
- Small select group: No more than 12 participants on the course
- Practical work in a real class room environment with experienced teachers supervising. Not just working on other teacher trainees
- Emphasis on assisting / apprenticing so that you are prepared to work alongside someone once you have finished.
- One of the few 500 Hour Training Programmes registered with the Yoga Alliance. (complies with their new 2008 standards).
This course is 450 hours of intensive practise and teaching skills over 9 weeks. You will be working about 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. Saturdays are ½ days and most Sundays are completely free. You will have 2 days off at Christmas.
All the teachers at Brahmani Yoga are dedicated to teaching WELL and SAFELY and therefore do not believe you can do a month or so of training and be prepared to go out and teach WELL. Teaching is a vocation so we look at the level one course as your starting point. On this course we will establish the basics of teaching, communication, adjustments, sequencing, anatomy & physiology, yoga philosophy, pranayama & meditation and all aspects of yoga to give you a solid foundation. You will be exploring all these topics on a personal level as well as for teaching purposes.
Brahmani Yoga also believes that Ashtanga Yoga is not the only practice and therefore you will be participating in all of the classes to gain a well rounded understanding of asana practice.
There are 50 non-contact hours included on this course. Most of these hours must be completed as pre-homework which mostly consists of reading and report writing as well as some practical exercises. This homework will be sent out in July and must be completed before the course is finished.
We put an emphasis on assisting/apprenticing once you have finished the course. There is so much valuable experience to be gained working alongside knowledgeable teachers for an extended period of time that you cannot attain by attending a course. By the end of the course you will be confident in assisting and will also have a foundation for teaching beginners and led primary classes. For those of you who already teach it will fine tune your skills and allow you an opportunity to delve deeper into your understanding of teaching.
If you do not have access to a senior teacher there will be some spaces available at the end of the course to stay at Brahmani Yoga and continue assisting the teachers here.

Indian rope massage
Qualified Yoga teacher - inspired by the teachings of VANDHA SCARAVELLI also offering:
- One to one sessions
- Hot stone fusion
- Holistic medical massage
- Reiki teacher
Helen - from wig dresser to massage therapist! - First qualified as a Swedish massage bodyworker in 1995. After 2 years of travelling adventures all over the world in 1993, I decided to embark on a year's journey to India. My mission was to dip into a spiritual adventure and train in Chavutti Thirumal / Indian rope massage. I returned home and began to grow my own business in Brighton. My inspiration began to deepen as I began a become involved with natural bodies yoga centre, training with Gary Carter for two years in the spirit of Vandha Scaravelli to become a yoga teacher. I became more influenced by structural integration and unusual forms of body work so I trained with JING MASSAGE in holistically medical massage and hot stone fusion. I am now enjoying a successful practice in Brighton and London.
My belief is that any form of massage that we are drawn to need to be incorporated in our daily lives as part of enjoying a balanced lifestyle. Using the quality and gifts of the breath, yoga postures and receiving massage we as individuals can take responsibility for our own healing and well being.
Please see my website for more details www.helennoakes.net
History of Chavutti
Chavutti Thirumal (massage by foot pressure) originated and developed in South India alongside the Kalari system (a martial art), Kathakali dancers and practioners of yoga. This massage technique was developed for maintaining suppleness in the body and for treating pain and swelling caused by combat.
It is equally suitable however as a treatment for those not involved in regular or strenuous physical exercise who wish to encourage their own fitness and well-being. Some of the benefits of this massage technique are that it:
- Encourages muscle tone
- Assists in releasing muscle tension
- Improves circulation
- Connects the breath and the spine to aid deep relaxation
Indian rope massage is entirely unique: your body will be massaged by my feet whilst my balance is held by a suspended rope. Long sweeping movements are incorporated, with varying degrees of pressure as appropriate for each client. Working with the breath is an integral part of the treatment. A full session can last up to two hours.
On this course, you will be...
- learning the sequence of moves incorporating some advanced massage techniques fusing deep tissue work and breathing techniques.
- learning protection techniques allowing full conservation of your energy whilst you are giving treatments
- learning about ethics
- embarking on 3 case studies where you will be practising on clients
- taking consultations and progressive notes
- receiving massages from the teacher
- given certification after completing the final massage with the teacher
- discussing business and marketing of your services as a quaiflied Chavutti practitioner
- receiving continued support and constructive feedback
Courses run from December 8-19 2008, January 12-23 2009, February 9-20 2009, and March 30 - April 10th 2009..
